Recovery and Going Home

After the surgery you will be taken to the recovery area where your condition and progress will be evaluated.

  • The average recovery time for most eye surgeries is minimal, less than half an hour.  But please note that the length of time spent in recovery will depend upon your condition and type of surgery. You will not be discharged until you are recovered enough to leave the center.
  • Please make sure that the person you choose to drive you home is a responsible adult who is capable of taking proper care of you. If you do not have an appropriate escort, your surgery will be rescheduled.
  • Do not drive for 24 hours after your procedure.
  • Before you leave the recovery area, you will have the opportunity to ask questions. You may want to know about how the surgery went or who to call in case of questions. You should have a clear understanding of what you need to do after you are released.
  • When it is time to leave the surgery center, a staff member will provide the necessary information about the care you should take when you return home. These instructions may include things like a medication schedule, things to avoid (such as certain activities), possible complications to look out for, when to follow up with your doctor, and a number to call in case of problems.
